Telescopic is the eleventh work in the Constellation series. It is intended to represent linearly the idea of zooming in on a section of the night sky.
This triptych was created on a sculpted ground of black and white gesso, moving a more black surface on the left to a more white surface on the right. The painting involved numerous overlapping layers of translucent, highly diluted paint. Paint and mineral spirits were poured onto the canvas, and then mixed and manipulated by moving the canvas itself, rather than with a brush. Gold leaf was applied last, moving from starlike circles on the left to non-specific gestural motifs on the right. Each section of the triptych is designed to be able to stand alone. All of them were worked on simultaneously.
Telescopic was featured in the June 2016 exhibition Just Between Us.
